Black History Awareness Month continues to be observed every February.  It is a time to reflect on the past, to evaluate the present and look forward to better, brighter tomorrow's with knowledge and confidence that we can be great, overcome adversity, and accomplish amazing things!

Black History is American History and World History from the face of courage, strength, and resilience (Harriet Tubman), to the stop light that saves lives (Garrett Morgan) to the pioneer of reading (Frederick Douglass), the voice of justice (Thurgood Marshall), and the freedom fighters (Civil Rights Movement). Black history is a testament that people have overcome and made significant contributions to impact and enrich health, education, business and industry, infrastructures, and civilization around the world.

We are Martin Luther King, Rosa Park, Sojourner Truth, Phyllis Wheatley, Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela, Zora Neale Hurston, Bessie Coleman,  Ruby Bridges, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Denzel Washington, Maxine Waters, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Maya Angelou. We are ALSO Marcus Garvey, Ida B. Wells, Charles Drew, Mae Jemison, Susan Baker, Gwendolyn Brooks, Steve Biko, Paul Robeson, Marva Collins, and faces of NASA: Katherine Johnson  Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson . We are Families, Scholars, Doctors, Musicians, Lawyers, Teachers, Artists, Actors, Engineers, People of Faith, and so many more dignified individuals and achievements that should reflect a beacon of hope in the eyes of our future: The Children.

Teaching children about Black History is important to their present and future as members of the "free world". Therefore, Black History merits being  acknowledged 365 days a year, and a rightful place in academic history books. - Sonya Harris
